Y'know, I've been trying for ages to think of witty stuff to say here but I just can't think of anything.
Let's see: I work at a hospital in Georgia. I'm a Georgia Certified Peer Specialist. I work with people who suffer from chronic schizophrenia and other disorders. I suffer from mental illness myself and try to be very open about that fact. (I think the best way to overcome the common misperceptions about people with mental illness is to show everyone just how common such disorders really are.)
I was born in Canada but moved to Georgia after high school. I studied American History at UGA and worked on my Master's degree but due to my mental illness found myself unable to complete my degree.
I worked in the furniture business for about eight years. Starting as a salesman and working my way up to store manager and then back down again to collector (it's a long story). About that - never get into any sort of "collections" type job. It's totally evil. I feel terrible about all the time I spent doing that and I'm sure it didn't help my mental health to be doing a job I hated so much. I'm much happier now working at the hospital, really helping people. I feel good about what I do now, and that's made a real change in my life. Actually, I'm still batshit crazy, but at least I feel good about what I do for a living.
I also have the most wonderful son and wife in the world.
